Mixed-use juxtapositions

Project: HUDA City Centre Metro Station with Property Development, Gurgaon, NCR

Architects: Vishwannath Associates, Bangalore

The terminal metro station on the stretch which connects Delhi to Gurgaon is HUDA City Center, which is an elevated station in Gurgaon. A need to develop the commercial activities in the areas around this metro station was felt. Hence, a traffic plan along with an extended basement were planned, which helped reduce vehicular traffic, and cut travel time.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) along with architects and consultants have proceeded in making this building a true transportation and a commercial hub. Vishwannath Associates (VA) was roped in by DMRC for combining the elevated station with property development. The target date for the inauguration was set for January 2010. VA took a sensitive approach to the project in terms of its environment impact on the surroundings. The proposal of making the building green received an overwhelming response from the then managing director of DMRC, Dr E Sreedharan, which in turn helped the architects to seek the expertise of TERI in this regard.

According to the principal architect, V Vishwanath, there are two major factors that set the metro station apart from the others – it is the last metro station in the southern corridor where property development causes an ever-increasing demand, especially in an area like Gurgaon, and it is the first green or sustainable metro station in the country, which is of utmost importance considering the depleting water table in the region and the extreme climatic conditions.

The architects took a sensitive approach towards the project by proposing to build an environment-friendly and disabled-friendly building by using eco-friendly materials which require less maintenance. This mixed-use development provides services like transportation, parking, retail, offices and a food court. Metro station standards have been adhered to in the building along with additional property development areas at this structure.
